The first single from Casanova was written by Hannon and produced by Darren Allison and Hannon, and released by Setanta on 17 June 1996. It tells of a Lothario who tries to seduce a woman, and is tricked into investigating strange noises in the woodshed, where her accomplices knock him unconscious and steal his car and money. It reached number one on the Indie Chart. Chris Evans championed it on his Radio 1 breakfast show, and Alexander Larman of The Critic points out that it became the band's first top 20 single.

The band's first music video was set in Venice. The single came out two weeks before a single with the same title by Super Furry Animals, who retitled theirs Something 4 the Weekend. NME in 2014 called it a hilarious Cold Comfort Farm-inspired tale, and Ned Raggett of AllMusic described it as at once soaring, cheeky, leering and truly weird. The B-sides included Birds of Paradise Farm and Love Is Lighter Than Air, both later added to the European edition of A Short Album About Love.
