Fight Test opens Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Pitchfork's Will Bryant called it a stunning pop song. Its vocal melody echoes Cat Stevens's Father and Son, and Stevens is credited as a writer along with the band and Dave Fridmann. Coyne told Rolling Stone he knew Father and Son and that Fight Test refers to its cadence, melody and chord progression. The spoken opening, the test begins now, was sampled from one of the sync tests of the band's Boombox Experiments.

The Fight Test EP appeared on Warner Bros. in 2003. It includes covers of Radiohead's Knives Out, Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head and Beck's The Golden Age, and was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 46th Grammys. The single reached 28 on the UK singles chart. The song was the theme of the MTV cartoon 3-South and was used in an episode of Smallville.
