The song was among those that did not work in the four-CD format of Zaireeka, so the band saved it for The Soft Bulletin. Released as that album's first single in June 1999, it reached 39 on the UK singles chart, the highest position of any single from the record. Its subtitle is Sacrifice of the New Scientists.

Pitchfork placed it at number 30 on its list of the top 200 tracks of the 1990s in 2010. The band plays it often, usually as the opening number of a show. In 2012 they rewrote some of the words as Thunder Up: Race for the Prize, a fight song for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who played in that year's NBA Finals.
