Charlie and Ira Louvin wrote "When I Stop Dreaming" as a slow waltz. It was recorded in May 1955 for Capitol, with the exact date, studio and personnel not found, and released that year as the first single after the Opry membership. It reached number eight on the country chart. American Songwriter describes its subject as a promise to stop loving someone once they stop dreaming about them. One report says Ira began it while Charlie was in Korea, from a single search summary that was not seen on a page.

Emmylou Harris recorded it in 1977 on Luxury Liner, with Dolly Parton singing backing vocals. Parton and Don Henley sang it as a duet in 2015 on Henley's Cass County, and Parton recorded her part in two or three takes; she had sung it earlier with Porter Wagoner. Skeeter Davis, Roy Orbison, Don Everly, Etta James, Johnny Cash and Martina McBride have also recorded it. No live history was found.
