The Fat of the Land

The third and final single from The Fat of the Land, released in November 1997, it also opens the album. Its refrain is lifted from the Ultramagnetic MCs' Give the Drummer Some, where Kool Keith had delivered the original lines. Kool Keith had already been sampled by the Prodigy on Out of Space. The female vocals were performed by Shahin Badar, and are based on Sheila Chandra's Nana (The Dreaming), which Howlett first sampled directly before having the vocal resung after clearance problems. Further samples come from Kool & the Gang, Randy Weston, Afrique, Mixmaster Gee and Rage Against the Machine.

Howlett was offered remixes by Jonny L, DJ Hype and Slacker and chose DJ Hype's for the single. It reached number 8 in the UK, spending 16 weeks in the top 100, and number 1 in Finland. Jonas Ã…kerlund directed the video, and it won Best Dance Video and Breakthrough Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Mixmag readers voted the track the third greatest dance track of all time in 2013. Pitchfork's review of the singles collection called it a really good big beat track. At Brixton Academy on 20 December 1997 it was filmed for the Their Law DVD, running 6:24. In 2012 the Noisia and Major Lazer remixes were collected on The Added Fat EP.
