Demos began in February 1997, and the band recorded 30 songs. Sessions started in Chicago with the producer Brad Wood and then moved to Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, with Corgan as de facto producer. With no regular drummer the band used a drum machine, along with Joey Waronker and Matt Cameron on a few songs each, and Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb added electronic sequencing to eight tracks. Flood returned to help finish and mix it. Rick Rubin produced a song, Let Me Give the World to You, that was left off the album. For Martha was recorded mostly as one live take. It was the first Pumpkins album without Chamberlin and the first without a writing contribution from Iha.

Rolling Stone's Greg Kot called the sound a complete break with the past. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Performance and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Singles were Ava Adore and Perfect. In 2014 Pitchfork's Ian Cohen, reviewing the expanded reissue, wrote that Corgan had made an album nearly as diverse, sprawling, confounding and compelling as Mellon Collie.
