Recorded mainly between December 1992 and March 1993 at Triclops Studios in Marietta, Georgia. The band relocated there to avoid local distractions. Vig said they worked on analogue tape, twelve hours a day, six days a week for about three months, and seven days a week for the last two. Corgan often overdubbed Iha's and Wretzky's parts, and Chamberlin played all the drums. Corgan said Soma alone carries up to 40 overdubbed guitar parts, and Vig said as many as 100 guitar parts were compressed into a single song. Alan Moulder mixed it, at Corgan's suggestion, because of his work on Loveless. A two-week booking became 36 days.

Pitchfork's Jayson Greene wrote in 2023 that the real story of the album is the story of a sound, and described how Corgan and Iha stacked overdubs played through Electro-Harmonix Big Muff pedals. The Rolling Stone writer Lorraine Ali called it a strong, multidimensional extension of Gish. NME's John Harris found it a startling, deeply satisfying record. It debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200, sold over six million copies worldwide and earned two Grammy nominations. The cover shows two girls in fairy wings, the child models Ali Laenger and Lysandra Roberts. The album is also listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
