Pop said Columbia executives insisted on two ballads for the album, and Gimme Danger was one of them. Pop played piano on it and Williamson acoustic guitar. David Bowie used a Time Cube echo device on the guitar when he remixed it. Pop called the result a beautiful guitar echo overload and later said the overdubbed guitar treatment was Bowie's doing. Lenny Kaye wrote in Rolling Stone that it slithers along on mellow acoustic guitar and a slippery violin-like lead.
A 6:45 live version is on side one of Metallic K.O. Ewan McGregor sang it in Velvet Goldmine and Frank Black recorded it for the video game Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. Jim Jarmusch took it as the title of his 2016 Stooges documentary. It appears in 110 of the 246 logged setlists with songs for Iggy and the Stooges.
