Shadows

A Gordon Lightfoot song from 1982, taken up by Rice on Native American and again on his Lightfoot album.
Tony Rice, from Native American (1988)

Gordon Lightfoot wrote "Shadows" and released it in 1982 on his Warner Bros. album of the same name, track three at 3:02, recorded in March, April and June 1981 at Eastern Sound in Toronto and produced by Lightfoot and Ken Friesen. Rice recorded it for Native American (1988), where it is the first track at 3:43, and it is also track eight of Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot (Rounder, May 28, 1996), a seventeen-song compilation he produced with Bill Wolf. A recording date and studio for his version were not found.

WMOT's guide to his Lightfoot songs says the original is not Lightfoot's strongest, that Rice pours it out like warm honey over a brilliant acoustic arrangement, and that he was seemingly the first of only a few artists to cover it. Alison Krauss later recorded it with Rice on guitar, and he plays it with Krauss and Union Station on the DVD A Hundred Miles or More: Live from the Tracking Room. Which version our upload is, the 1988 studio recording, the 1996 compilation or a live take, is not known.
