Produced by Jimmy Iovine, it mixes studio recordings, including some made at Sun Studio in Memphis, with live tracks from Denver, Tempe and San Francisco. It was number one in the United States for six weeks and sold over 14 million copies, and Desire became the band's first UK number one single. The accompanying film, directed by Phil Joanou, opened in Ireland on 27 October 1988 and in the United States on 4 November, running 98 minutes.

Jon Pareles of the New York Times called it a mess driven by sincere egomania. Jay Cocks of Time called it the best live rock album ever made.
