Pitchfork's Scott Plagenhoef wrote in 2008 that the record came out at the tail end of 1983 and was packaged around the scenery of Red Rocks in Colorado, with a scarlet cover and a concurrent video, Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky. In fact only two of its songs, Gloria and Party Girl, were recorded at Red Rocks. Most came from a show in Germany and one from Boston. The band chose their best songs rather than release a full concert and sequenced them out of order for impact.

The record opens with crowd noise and closes on a sing-along of 40. Plagenhoef singled out Sunday Bloody Sunday with its introduction that this is not a rebel song, I Will Follow, Gloria and The Electric Co. as arguably the definitive readings of those songs. He also noted that at Live Aid in 1985 the band spent more than half their allotted time on Bad.
