The band first made a rough version with Loren Humphrey at The Diamond Mine in New York, then decided the debut belonged in England, and Humphrey came to Greenmount Studios in Leeds. Haycocks said they wanted to hold on to the bedroom sound they already had, and that the finished record sounds like Greenmount to him. Coyote was written only days before the sessions. It was mixed at Magic Mountain in Tuxedo Park, New York, and mastered by Felix Davis at Metropolis Studios in London. All four members share the writing credit.

The band described it as an album for their younger selves, instant and honest, with a bigger record of horns and strings saved for later. It entered the Official Albums Chart at number 5 and spent a week at the top of the Record Store Chart. Rolling Stone UK gave it five stars, Clash eight out of ten, and Stereogum made it Album of the Week. NME found the down-to-earth debut everything it needed to be. Beats Per Minute, more mixed, called it excellent but far from perfect, and singled out Big Wheels as a misstep.
