Moraz left early in the writing, and Wakeman returned as a hired session player before rejoining in full after a party in Montreux. Parts of Parallels and Awaken use the church organ of St. Martin's in Vevey, fed to the studio by telephone line. Hipgnosis designed the triple gatefold, ending Roger Dean's run of covers. The album topped the British chart for two weeks and reached eight in the US. Steve Pond in the Los Angeles Times heard the band lowering its sights and making its most appealing record since Close to the Edge, and AllMusic has called it perhaps the most overlooked record in the catalogue.
