Voices Carry was the first single from 'Til Tuesday's 1985 debut album, produced by Mike Thorne and recorded in 1985 at RPM Sound Studios in New York. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in its fourteenth week and was the band's only US top ten hit. Epic's A&R man Dick Wingate chose it as the single over Love in a Vacuum and Looking Over My Shoulder because it defined the band and its style.
The song was originally written and sung as if to a woman, and Epic, which thought it a powerful, commercial song, was unhappy with that. The band changed the gender of the love interest. Mann later said she wrote it about a female acquaintance, from a male point of view, and that the studio verse beginning He wants me but only part of the time came from something she was going through with a relationship. Pitchfork notes it was one of the first songs she wrote on her own.
The video, directed by D.J. Webster and shot on 35mm film, shows Mann as a musician with an abusive boyfriend, and at a concert she stands up in the audience, her rattail showing from under her black lace cap. It won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. Mann reunited with 'Til Tuesday in May 2025 for their first show in 33 years.
