Mr. Harris is track nine on Whatever, at 4:05. Mann said she was trying chords she did not usually use, including diminished chords, and credited Jon Brion's influence. She guessed there was also a Zombies or Colin Blunstone influence. The words came from seeing an old man in a suit and hat raking leaves in his front yard in her neighborhood and imagining the life of a single or depressed older man.

Brion wrote the woodwind arrangement, Randy Brion plays euphonium, Mike Breaux plays oboe, and the Sid Sharp Strings play parts arranged by Jimmie Haskell. Robert Christgau named it a choice cut when he reviewed other records for the Village Voice in 1994. Mann herself, in 2018, said she thought the song was clumsy.
