Released in 1972 as the first single from Billion Dollar Babies, it reached 26 in the US during election week, 4 in Britain and 3 in Austria. The theme came from the 1972 presidential election. Cooper called it total political satire and said that the band hated politics, but the idea of Alice, the scourge of the world, as president was too good to pass up. The riff and part of the melody are recycled from Reflected on Pretties for You (1969). Hart Perry directed the promotional video, which inspired one of the first MTV-style story-line promos, three years before Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video.

John Lennon called it a great record but said Paul McCartney would have done it better, which Cooper agreed with. Joey Ramone acknowledged its resemblance to I Wanna Be Sedated, according to Cooper. The Guardian's Simon Reynolds pointed to the megalomaniacal bombast of Cooper's rasp on it.
