Jimmy Page and Robert Plant first recorded it for their 1998 album Walking into Clarksdale. Plant has said it is about yearning for someone, with lyrics about unfinished business. On Raising Sand Krauss sings harmony and plays fiddle, among a band that includes Marc Ribot, T Bone Burnett, Dennis Crouch and Jay Bellerose.

The version won Record of the Year at the 2009 Grammys. After the win it entered Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 at number 20. A video was released in 2008, shot in a house built in 1905 in South Los Angeles, and was nominated for a 2009 CMT Music Award. Rounder issued it as a US CD single in 2008, in a 3:47 radio edit and the 5:53 album version. Chris Jones of the BBC felt it was "completely improved" from the original, and Thom Jurek of AllMusic described the version as "slow, plodding, almost crawling".
