Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote it at the end of an unproductive day. Overstreet later told the author Ace Collins that as they tried to find another way to say nothing, they came up with the song. Keith Whitley recorded it, and it reached number one on the Billboard country chart in December 1988. He died the following May.
Krauss and Union Station cut it in 1994 for Keith Whitley: A Tribute Album. When the track began to get unsolicited airplay, the label BNA Records sent it to radio in January 1995. It reached number 3 on the country singles chart, the commercial single reached number 2 on the singles sales chart, and it was named the CMA's Single of the Year. The B-side was Whitley's Charlotte's in North Carolina. Krauss told the Los Angeles Times in March 1995 that its success was "a freak thing". The recording went onto Now That I've Found You, and a live version runs 4:22 on Live. The band has played it at least 137 times, more than any of its other songs.
