Goldfinger

The song Wheeler took for a B-side: it became Ash's first UK top-ten hit.

Released on 15 April 1996, Goldfinger reached number five in the UK and was Ash's first top-ten single. Owen Morris heard it at pre-production in December 1995. Wheeler thought it a B-side, and Morris exclaimed that it was a single. It was the first song recorded for the album, on New Year's Day 1996. The band borrowed an instrumental break from what they thought was Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger but was a song by John Barrie, and later sections were written around the world while touring Trailer. Wheeler said they kept the name because it has a lot of mystery.

In 1996 Wheeler said it was the best song they had ever written, and the best words he had written. The video was directed by Mike Brady and the band disliked it because they had little involvement. B-sides were I Need Somebody, written by Hamilton, Sneaker and a cover of Smokey Robinson's Get Ready. Wheeler later said he wanted to explore the darker side of Goldfinger on Nu-Clear Sounds.

Live

The Guardian called it a stand-out when Ash played 1977 in full at the Roundhouse in 2008. BBC Music's Mike Diver wrote in 2012 that it had stood up to the test of time.
