Pitchfork says the song conveys urgency with stuttering, rhythmic shifts, and calls H.R.'s final-verse rant an album high point. He abandons his cool vibrato for a desperate delivery with rhythmic scats around the line "In this house of suffering, don't want but just one thing". It was one of the songs H.R. recorded in the last hours before going to prison.
Sublime covered it in 1995 and played it frequently afterwards, and their bassist Eric Wilson said I Against I inspired them to blend genres. Machine Head covered it in 1999 and The Bled in 2005.
