After nine months of writing on the road, they made Teen Dream in about three weeks at Dreamland, a converted church in Hurley, New York, which Scally said was more like a barn, with Chris Coady producing. They kept most of their Devotion-era instruments but stripped back the reverb, aiming, Scally said, to make the songs huge without killing the feeling; he played Coady Jimmy Ruffin's What Becomes of the Brokenhearted as a reference. Daniel Franz and Graham Hill played drums. Scally called it the first record he was happy with, and Legrand said she imagined people playing it really loud. Special editions came with a DVD of films for every song by different directors, Legrand among them.

It reached forty-three in America and sold more than 130,000 copies in its first two years. Pitchfork gave it Best New Music and later placed it twenty-first among the best albums of the 2010s; The Guardian found it icy. It is in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
