In May 2008 the Norwegian radio show Lydverket asked Beach House to write a song inspired by their surroundings, and they wrote Norway on the train between Bergen and Oslo; Scally said they first sang it acoustically on the train. Legrand said it was not really about the country but about the feeling when your imagination is set off by something visually overwhelming. The wavering, seasick slide guitar and the tumbling vocal are its signatures.

It was released as a free download in November 2009, ahead of the album, and Pitchfork named it Best New Track. The Quietus thought it sounded uncannily like Bat for Lashes's Daniel. Its film, by the Baltimore collective Showbeast, follows a snoring puppet that inhales people into its dreams, and was designed to sync with the music; a version without the song, called Snorway, is hidden on the Teen Dream DVD. The band played it live more than a year before it came out.
