Bert and John
A guitar duo record with John Renbourn, built from short pieces for two guitars.
Bert Jansch, 1966
- Released
- September 1966
- Label
- Transatlantic
Bert and John was issued by Transatlantic as TRA 144, with Bill Leader credited as recorder and a laminated sleeve credited to Brian Shuel. It collects short pieces for two guitars, among them East Wind, Soho, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Stepping Stones. Most tracks are credited jointly to Bert Jansch and John Renbourn.
A Guardian tribute says it was recorded with Renbourn in his St John's Wood flat one evening and was effectively a dry run for the music the pair would make in Pentangle. The same piece says that peers, Jimmy Page most notably, would stand in front of the stage and try to absorb what the two were playing. An expanded American edition called Stepping Stones followed from Vanguard in 1969, adding It Don't Bother Me and My Lover.
