Nathan Joseph produced Nicola for Transatlantic as TRA 157. It was recorded at Decca Studios and Sound Techniques in London, with Gus Dudgeon and John Wood as engineers and musical arrangements by David Palmer, later known as Dee Palmer. Jansch is credited on acoustic, electric and twelve-string guitar and vocals.

Go Your Way My Love was written with Anne Briggs, and the record also includes the traditional Love Is Teasing and Walter Davis's Come Back Baby. An orchestrated Train Song was attempted but left off, though Palmer remembered it fondly. Two outtakes, In This Game and Dissatisfied Blues, appeared on the 1972 sampler Box of Love and on the reissue.
