Noah Georgeson, known for Joanna Newsom's The Milk-Eyed Mender and Devendra Banhart's Cripple Crow, produced The Black Swan. Beth Orton and Banhart appear on Katie Cruel, When the Sun Comes Up and Watch the Stars, and the players include the drummer Otto Hauser, Paul Wassif on slide guitar and Helena Espvall on cello. MOJO gave it five stars.
Grayson Haver Currin of Pitchfork scored it 7.9 and called it a terrific success, noting that it was his Drag City debut and his first new material to get a proper American release since Edge of a Dream. He praised the cello on the title track, the song High Days, written for friends including Cliff Aungier, and a fingerpicked country number, Texas Cowboy Blues.
