Harrison wrote the song in Copenhagen in December 1969, during the Delaney and Bonnie tour, with Preston and Clapton present; Preston recalled that Harrison wrote the verses after the group developed the initial idea. Harrison first considered giving it to Edwin Hawkins, then chose Preston. It was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in January 1970, with Preston as principal musician, a guitarist, bassist and drummer from the Temptations' band, and the Edwin Hawkins Singers, then touring the UK.
Preston's version opens with the hallelujah refrain, sings Hare Krishna only twice and omits the Vedic prayer. AllMusic's Bruce Eder called Preston's gospel numbers stunning, saying they make the Harrison versions seem pallid. A UK single planned for September 1970 was withdrawn, and a US single followed on December 3, 1970, with "Little Girl" on the other side, reaching number 90 on the Hot 100 and 23 on the soul singles chart. He recorded a live version with King Curtis in March 1971, released in 2006, and played it at the Concert for George in 2002. Our upload is titled with the album and so is the 1970 studio version.
