The single came out on Apple in the UK on June 27, 1969 and in the US on July 7, produced by Harrison. According to uDiscover, Preston sang with Keith Richards on bass, Ginger Baker on drums and tambourine, Harrison on lead guitar, Clapton on the solos and Doris Troy and Madeline Bell on backing vocals; the bass credit is disputed, since another source names Klaus Voormann and doubts Richards. The album version, Parts 1 and 2, runs 5:34, and an alternate 4:13 version is on CD reissues.
In the UK it entered at 42 and spent two weeks at number 11 in August 1969; in the US it reached 62 on the Hot 100, and a 1972 re-release reached 65. It reached number 14 in the Netherlands and was in the top 20 in the Netherlands and New Zealand. Writer credits were not given on the pages read beyond Preston as principal writer of the album, and no covers, samples or verified live history were found.
