The song is a cover. Its original, Und jetzt ist es still, was recorded by Horst Winter in 1948, with music by Hans Lang and German lyrics by Erich Meder. Bert Reisfeld wrote the English lyrics, and Betty Hutton recorded the English version in 1951 as the B-side of Murder, He Says. Björk said that Guy Sigsworth found it on a cassette compilation at a truck stop and that it became the anthem of the previous tour. She recorded it with a 20-piece orchestra and included it so that every song on Post would be a shock. It was the last track recorded for the album.
Released on 13 November 1995 as the third single from Post, it remains her biggest hit. It reached number four in the UK, where it spent 15 weeks on the chart and was certified gold for 400,000 copies, and number six in Australia. Spike Jonze shot the video in the San Fernando Valley as a homage to Technicolor musicals, Busby Berkeley and Jacques Demy. It earned six MTV Video Music Award nominations in 1996 and won for Best Choreography, and it was nominated for a Grammy but lost to Michael and Janet Jackson's Scream.
