Through the Window of a Train

Their 2008 Rounder album, the first they produced themselves, recorded in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Blue Highway, 2008

Through the Window of a Train (Rounder 11661-0594-2) was recorded at Alan Maggard's studio in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and produced by the band for the first time. It has twelve songs, all written or co-written by band members, and reached number two on the bluegrass album chart. Tim Stafford, Wayne Taylor, Shawn Lane, Rob Ickes and Jason Burleson play, with Tony Creasman on percussion. Songs named in reviews include the title song, "Two Soldiers" (Stafford and Wood Newton), "A Week from Today" and "My Ropin' Days Are Done" (Stafford and Bobby Starnes), "V-Bottom Boat" and "Where Did the Morning Go?" (Lane), "Homeless Man" (Taylor) and Burleson's instrumental "The North Cove". Jerome Clark of Rambles says "Two Soldiers" borrows a Civil War-era ballad title for an Iraq War story of officers bringing news of a death, and that "My Ropin' Days" echoes "Streets of Laredo".

Clark wrote that it feels practically flawless; Art Menius in Bluegrass Unlimited called it a deceptively understated masterpiece and possibly the best bluegrass album of the young century; Country Standard Time's Bobby Jones wrote highly recommended, highly respected; and Glide Magazine gave it 4.5, saying self-production in Big Stone Gap gave it an organic flow.
