Kaya was made from tracks recorded alongside those on Exodus, and the Wailers produced it. It came out around the time of the One Love Peace Concert and Marley's return to Jamaica from exile in London. Three of the songs are new versions of tracks from Soul Revolution Part II (1971). It reached the top five of the British album chart. Ted Jensen mastered it at Sterling Sound.
Reviews were divided. Lester Bangs wrote in Rolling Stone that it was a succession of the most tepid reggae cliches. Robert Christgau wrote that if it was middle-of-the-road music, it was like good Steely Dan, and that Marley had never sung more subtly. A 40th anniversary remix appeared on 2 June 2018.
