The Wailers approached Lee Scratch Perry in August 1970 to record a whole album, and the sessions at Randy's studio, above Randy's Record Mart in Kingston, ran until November. Trojan Records first issued it in Britain in December 1970. Perry's production is sparse and uses only guitar, bass, drums, electronic organs and vocals, with no horns.

The title track came from the first collaboration between Perry and Marley. Marley started the idea and dictated the lyrics while Perry arranged and co-wrote the music. Robert Christgau wrote in Newsday in 1973 that the album was better than Catch a Fire. According to the book I and I: The Natural Mystics, the band disliked the cover and were not consulted on it.
