The album is a compilation of recordings made in 1964 and 1965 by Neville "Bunny" Livingston (Bunny Wailer), Robert Marley and Peter McIntosh (Peter Tosh), chosen by Clement Coxsone Dodd as the best of the period. They were backed by the Studio One band the Soul Brothers. It was the first full-length LP of the group's work, and later reissues were newly overdubbed to fit the fashions of the day.
Simmer Down and Rude Boy, recorded in 1964 and 1965, were youth anthems that established the Wailers as leaders of a new movement. The band photograph on the cover of the 1971 reissue, with Bunny Wailer on the left, Marley in the middle and Tosh on the right, inspired Walt Jabsco, the logo of 2 Tone Records, drawn by Jerry Dammers and Horace Panter.
