With two exceptions, the tracks are considered to come from three nights at the Pavillon de Paris, 25 to 27 June 1978, during the Kaya tour, though accounts of the track listing differ. Kinky Reggae had not been played since the 1976 Rastaman Vibration tour, so the concert it came from is unclear. Jack Nuber was the engineering mixer.
Like Catch a Fire, the first pressing had a novelty cover. The windows of the bus on the front were cut out to show part of the inner sleeve, and because it was a double album the listener could choose among four scenes. Rolling Stone heard a new side of Marley on it, fanciful, lovelorn and vulnerable. The final track, Jamming, with the audience in a frenzy, is said to capture the intensity of his live shows.
