Aguilera wrote it with Scott Storch, who produced it, and Dave Navarro plays guitar. It was inspired by Guns N' Roses' November Rain. The lyric thanks a man who wronged her for making her a fighter. Aguilera has said it grew out of a chaotic and abusive home, and that she wanted an emotionally rich and positive song, especially for women. Jancee Dunn of Rolling Stone called it a sterile foray into rock.
It was released as the third single on 10 March 2003, peaked at 20 on the Hot 100 and reached three in Britain, where it was the longest-running single from Stripped on the chart. Floria Sigismondi directed a video built around moths, filmed in Los Angeles on 10 to 12 March 2003, and it won the Juno Award for Video of the Year in 2004. Jordin Sparks sang it on American Idol, and Darren Criss performed it on Glee in 2012.

She first performed it on Saturday Night Live on 15 March 2003. It closed the encore of the Back to Basics Tour, and in June 2018 she sang it with Jimmy Fallon in a New York subway station.
