Pam Sheyne, Steve Kipner and David Frank wrote it, and Kipner and Frank produced it. It began as If You Want to Be with Me, and Aguilera's management suggested the final title. The writers had interest from the group Innosense and from Paula Abdul, but neither had a finished album, while Aguilera's was done, and Ron Fair of RCA pushed for it. Aguilera was not too crazy about the demo at first and later became proud of the result. She said the song is not about sex but about self-respect.
It entered the Hot 100 at 61 in the week of 3 July 1999, reached number one on the chart dated 31 July and stayed for five weeks. It reached number one in 21 countries. Diane Martel directed the video in Malibu. Malaysia banned it, and she re-recorded some lyrics. It was nominated for the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Aguilera sang a Spanish version, Genio Atrapado, on Mi Reflejo in 2000 and a remake, Genie 2.0, in 2008.
Live
She opened a seven-minute medley of her hits with it at the American Music Awards in November 2008, and she sang it with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2021.
