Girlfriend and its French counterpart Damn, dis-moi were released together on 17 May 2018. Dâm-Funk is credited as a co-writer, sings on the English version and plays keytar. In Pitchfork's song-by-song interview the artist spoke of liking the production on 7 Days of Funk, the album Dâm-Funk made with Snoop, and of using G-funk only with an actual G-funk artist. The harmonic basis of the song is a loop from Apple software provided free of charge. The Fader reported a statement defending the use of a free Apple loop after a YouTube video pointed it out.
Alexis Petridis of the Guardian called it audibly inspired by early 1980s post-disco boogie, and said it may well be the best pop single of the year. Time named it song of the year. Damn, dis-moi peaked inside the top 10 of the French singles chart, and Girlfriend entered the UK Singles Chart at number 95. Girlfriend was played on Later... with Jools Holland on 5 June 2018, and the French version was sung at La Chanson de l'année 2018 in Nîmes on 8 June.
