Christine and the Queens produced the record with Cole M.G.N., who handled vocal production and co-produced The Walker, 5 Dollars, What's-Her-Face, Damn (What Must a Woman Do) and Bruce est dans le brouillard, after early sessions with Mark Ronson and Damon Albarn were dropped. Work took place in studios in Paris, London and Los Angeles. In Paris the sessions used Air's studio, which the band no longer uses, and an old synthesizer called a Neuron was used on most of the album. Manny Marroquin mixed it at Larrabee Studios. The album came out in an English and a French edition. In the English edition Feel So Good takes the place of the French Bruce est dans le brouillard and Le G. The singles were Girlfriend, Doesn't Matter, 5 Dollars and The Walker, each also issued in French.
In The Fader the references named were immediate, catchy pop productions like Cameo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Michael Jackson's Dangerous. Dâm-Funk played keytar on Girlfriend, in keeping with a stated aim to use G-funk only with an actual G-funk artist. A Pitchfork interview called the album red hot, sweaty and insatiable, in contrast to the slow-burning warmth of Chaleur humaine. Jamieson Cox of Pitchfork called it a portrait of an instantly memorable character making utterly gleaming pop music, and Alexis Petridis of the Guardian heard the whole album harking back to the early 1980s, with an echo of Scritti Politti on Comme si and of Jam and Lewis's work on Janet Jackson's Control in Feel So Good. Metacritic gave it 89 from 26 reviews. It reached number 1 in Wallonia, 2 in France and Scotland, 3 in the UK and 5 in Flanders, and went platinum in France and silver in the UK.
