Dear Sister

A song of a sister's loss built on Civil War letters, named IBMA song of the year for 2014.
Claire Lynch, from Dear Sister (2013)

"Dear Sister" is track five of the album, 4:43, written by Lynch and Louisa Branscomb. It is based on Civil War letters: Bluegrass Today says they came from Branscomb's ancestors, who fought for the Confederacy and wrote to their sister, some of them dying; Wikipedia ties it to Frank Anderson Chappel's 2002 book Dear Sister: Civil War Letters to a Sister in Alabama. The two accounts may describe the same material, which the sources do not settle. Bluegrass Today's David Morris called it a tear jerker and his clear favorite on the record.

It won the IBMA's song of the year award in 2014. Setlist.fm lists it four times across 25 of her setlists from 1995 to 2022, the most played song on her page. No covers or samples were found, and it is not known whether our upload is the album take or a live one.
