Zuckerzeit was recorded in January 1974, after the move to Forst, with Cluster as producers and Michael Rother credited as co-producer, though his contribution was mainly lending equipment. Roedelius and Moebius recorded separately on different days, each writing five of the ten tracks. The stated length is 36:13, but the track times total 38:13.
AllMusic's John Bush called it an unexpected jump, and Pitchfork's Andy Beta wrote that it is electronic pop at its most protean. Pitchfork ranked it 63rd of the best albums of the 1970s. Roedelius said in a 1997 interview that working with Rother changed his and Moebius's focus.
