Caramel was released on November 5, 2013 by Wikipedia's date, or November 4 on MusicBrainz, on Mexican Summer, Because Music and Phantasy. It reached number 193 in the UK, 38 on the UK Independent chart and 195 in Belgium's Flanders chart, and has a Metacritic score of 70 out of 100. Singles were I'm the Man That Will Find You and Do I Make You Feel Shy?. Mockasin recorded it in about a month in a Tokyo hotel room, almost wholly by himself, telling Interview magazine that he just had a month to do it in a hotel in Tokyo and that he had to be quiet in the hotel. He went after his father had a major heart attack in New Zealand. He told The Quietus that he hates recording studios and prefers hotels and limited equipment.

On the title he said that the word caramel sounded so nice, and described the record as a sequel to the first album: the dolphin leaves, the man who loved it is sad, and the new album begins with him happier. Reviews were mixed: AllMusic 3.5 stars, The Guardian and The Observer four stars, NME 7 out of 10, Paste 9, Pitchfork 6.7, PopMatters 5, Resident Advisor 2.5 and Consequence of Sound a D.
