It is the band's seventh studio album and the first since Intriguer. Mitchell Froom, who produced the early records, returned and is now also the keyboard player. Liam and Elroy Finn are full members. The Guardian reported that rehearsals began in mid-November 2019, the day after the 13-month Fleetwood Mac tour finished, and that playing Fleetwood Mac's propulsive songs had kickstarted Finn's desire to record an outgoing rather than introspective album. Nine-tenths of the rhythm tracks were cut at Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles. When Covid-19 spread, the band went back to their own corners of the world, and Finn finished the record in New Zealand. Seymour sent in French horn samples. Finn told NME that he wanted the sound of a band playing in a room, with no headphones or click tracks.
The singles were Whatever You Want in October 2020, To the Island in February 2021 and Playing with Fire in May 2021. The video for Whatever You Want stars Mac DeMarco. The Guardian's Andrew Stafford noted that the dozen songs are all under four minutes, that Liam Finn wrote Show Me the Way and Goodnight Everyone, and that Love Isn't Hard at All is a co-write by Elroy and Neil with Sharon Finn singing backing vocals. Tim Finn has a co-writing credit on Too Good for This World. Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod were not part of the new line-up. Finn called that "a tough call." The album won Best Adult Contemporary Album at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards.
