It was written by D'Angelo, under his real name Michael Archer, with Kendra Foster. Gina Figueroa speaks the Spanish passage, and Brent Fischer arranged and conducted the strings. It contains a sample of Curtis Mayfield's We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue. D'Angelo produced it himself.
Much of it was finished by 2007, when Questlove leaked snippets on Australia's Triple J radio. It was completed and released in December 2014 and went to radio on 13 January 2015. D'Angelo played it live for the first time at the House of Blues on 4 July 2012, and on Saturday Night Live on 31 January 2015. It peaked at 43 on the Billboard R&B chart in 2015, won the Grammy for Best R&B Song and was nominated for Record of the Year at the 58th Grammy Awards.
