Untitled (How Does It Feel)

Voodoo

Written and produced by D'Angelo and Raphael Saadiq, it began as a tribute to Prince, in six-eight time, with Saadiq on guitar and bass. Questlove described it as finding the line between parody and honesty. It was recorded in 1999 at Electric Lady Studios, and D'Angelo overdubbed the choir of voices in the choruses himself. It peaked at 25 on the Hot 100 and 2 on the R&B singles chart, and cuts off mid-word on the line How does it fee.

Paul Hunter and the manager Dominique Trenier made the video in a single day on a New York soundstage. It shows D'Angelo from the waist up, appearing nude, though he wore pajama bottoms that stayed out of the camera's view. The song won the 2001 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Rolling Stone named it the fourth best single of 2000, 51 among the best songs of the decade in 2009, and number 379 on its 2021 list of the 500 greatest songs. D'Angelo grew uncomfortable with the sex-symbol image the video created.
