Please Forgive Me

The song that started the album: chords and lyrics that arrived while he was alone with a drum machine.
David Gray, from White Ladder (1999)

22 November 1999
Album
White Ladder

Gray said he slipped away with the Roland Groovebox during a dinner party and the chords and lyrics fell out of the sky. The hairs on his neck stood on end, and he called it the starting pistol for White Ladder. Polson created the drum'n'bass-like effect. Asked in an interview where it came from, Gray said it came from nowhere.

It was first released on 22 November 1999 and reached 72 in Britain. When it was reissued on 16 October 2000 it reached 18. Hartnoll of Orbital was commissioned to remix it, and the remix was pressed as 10-inch and 12-inch promos and made record of the week on Pete Tong's Essential Selection, gaining heavy airplay in Ibiza. Pitchfork also noted that it was in the pilot of the television series Scrubs. The 2000 single added a live Babylon recorded at the Point, Dublin, on 22 December 1999.
