Soft Cell released the original on Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and as a single in January 1982, when it reached number three in Britain. Gray had it in his live set, so he and Polson cut it live, with Simon Edwards of Fairground Attraction on bass. Polson said he was starstruck. The version closes White Ladder at 9:03, with extra lines at the end from Van Morrison's Madame George and Into the Mystic. Pitchfork called it an unfathomably sad, nine-minute cover. Released as a single, it reached 26 in Britain.
