Billy Myles wrote the song, and Freddie King first recorded it in 1960 as a slow 12-bar blues. It was in the Dominos' set on the August 1970 British tour. Clapton had already played it live in 1965 with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, on the album Primal Solos, and the Dominos' studio version came in 1970. He also played it live on In Concert, E. C. Was Here, Just One Night and 24 Nights, among others.
Rolling Stone's 2020 entry on the album named it, with "Key to the Highway", as an example of Clapton and Allman's interplay, both harmonious and fiercely competitive. In his 1970 review, Ed Leimbacher counted it as filler.
