Jimi Hendrix wrote "Little Wing" and the Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded it in October 1967 for Axis: Bold as Love. The Dominos played it at the Marquee Club in London ten days after their Lyceum debut, and it was in their August club set. At Criteria, with Allman on second lead guitar, they recorded it on 9 September 1970, just before the main section of Layla.
It is the eleventh track on the album and was the B-side of the "Bell Bottom Blues" single. Rolling Stone called the band's version "exquisitely arranged", while the book Legends of Rock Guitar called it bombastic. The Fillmore East performance of 23 October 1970 appears on Live at the Fillmore, and Clapton kept playing the song in later years, including on his 1973 Rainbow Concert recordings.
