Oshin
The 2012 debut: thirteen short, bright guitar songs recorded in Brooklyn and named for an Inuit print on its cover.
DIIV, 2012
Daniel Schlett recorded and mixed it at Strange Weather in Brooklyn. Smith told Interview in June 2012 that he knew exactly what the record was going to sound like and pushed for heavy compression, and he said later that the album hid a bit behind an image and a sound. The cover is an Inuit print by Kiakshuk, the back cover is by Kopapik Qaqyuarqyuk and the liner illustration by Simeonie Kopapik. It reached number five on the US Heatseekers chart and number 33 on the US independent albums chart. Reviews included NME at 9 out of 10, Uncut at 8, Spin at 7, AllMusic at three and a half stars and the AV Club at B-plus; Stereogum put it 22nd and Pitchfork 40th among 2012's albums. The iTunes edition adds "Geist" and "Bambi Slaughter".
