J Mascis

Green Mind is close to being a J Mascis solo album. He played most of the instruments, and Murph appears only on tracks 1, 7 and 9. The drums were recorded at Sorcerer Sound, most of the rest at Fort Apache North, and the mixing was done at White Crow Audio. Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie engineered, and Slade plays mellotron on Water and Thumb. Don Fleming, Joe Harvard and Jay Spiegel add guitar, tape, percussion and acoustic bass. The cover photograph, a child smoking a cigarette, is Priscilla, Jones Beach, 1969 by Joseph Szabo. Turnip Farm turns up in the film Reality Bites.

Tom Sinclair wrote in Rolling Stone that it sounded every bit as energetic and full-blooded as Bug. Looking back, Fred Thomas of AllMusic wrote that it ushered in the version of the band that would live out the rest of the 1990s.
