Shaw 'Nuff / Lover Man
The May 11, 1945 Guild session behind "Shaw 'Nuff": four sides with Charlie Parker, among the first commercial bebop records.
Dizzy Gillespie, 1945
The session on May 11, 1945, billed as Dizzy Gillespie and His All Stars, produced four sides in about 12 minutes 50 seconds: "Salt Peanuts" (3:16, with a Gillespie vocal), "Shaw 'Nuff" (3:01), "Lover Man" (3:23, sung by Sarah Vaughan) and "Hot House" (3:10, by Tadd Dameron). The players were Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Gillespie on trumpet and vocals, Al Haig on piano, Curley Russell on bass and Sid Catlett on drums. "Shaw 'Nuff" came out as Guild 1002 and then Musicraft 354, with "Lover Man" on the other side. Guild went out of business and its masters passed to Musicraft and later Savoy; the Miles Ahead site's session page calls these the first commercial bebop records. The sides were gathered on the 1988 compilation Shaw 'Nuff and on Groovin' High: The Guild-Musicraft Sessions.
